Batman: The Dark Knight Review

Iron Man has fallen! Up until this point I thought we had reached the pinnacle of superhero films with the great Iron Man, but as with all empires, eventually they must fall.  Batman: The Dark Knight rolled onto the screen with gusto, passion and excitement that somehow exceeds the quality and story telling of Iron Man and the other awesome superhero spectacle Batman Begins! I was awestruck with this film.  Batman: The Dark Knight wasn’t just a great superhero movie, it was a great film.  All of the whispering about Heath Ledger giving a tremendous Oscar worthy performance is legit.  He captured the character of the Joker, but not in the silly and goofy way we saw him portrayed in the TV series Batman, but as the crazed, evil and cruel criminal seen in the Dark Knight graphic novels from the 80s.  The most well known hero vs. villain combination known to every American comes alive on the big screen.  This film blows away all of the previous Batman adventures that have come to the movie screen, and I loved the original Batman with Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson playing the Joker.  What sets this film apart from the others is its sense of realism, which is what I love.  The events taking place in Batman are happening here and now, and not in some cartoony alternate dimension.  All of the characters are believable, and could exist in our time.  All of the abilities and technology that Batman utilizes seems to exist possibly.  This film is the best film of the summer, with Iron Man running a close second.  I am not going to type your heads off with countless explanations of the story and characters I am just going to say see this film!

  1. I agree that it was a great movie, but it required much more intellect than the average film, and I noticed that it actually irked a few people in the audience and left a few of the youngest audience members mystified. Of course I reveled over the vast number of brain cells enticed into action over this rather complex and deep, deep story line. Sure I love having my adrenaline spiked into action, but I’m more impressed when my brain-matter, matters! The relationship between the Joker and Batman was portrayed in such a way that the viewing audience had to utilize much thought to make sense out of the plot. There were only two weaknesses with the movie: (1) Batman wasn’t really given enough to do, and (2) D.A. Dent’s role left me a bit riled.

As Ron said, Ledger’s performance was amazing. The performance will earn an Oscar!

    Jay’s Grade: A-
