The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the prequel to the epic and popular Lord of the Rings Trilogy of movies. For those of you who are fans of the books, you will know that the Hobbit was actually written before the Lord of the Rings, but the movies presented the Lord of the Rings first before finally releasing the Hobbit. The Hobbit movie had big shoes or big hairy feet to fill by coming at the heels of the Lord of the Rings series. Where as the Lord of the Rings dealt with a grand struggle between the forces of good and evil of Middle Earth that would decide the fate for all, the Hobbit is a more intimate story detailing the adventures of Bilbo Baggins.
The Hobbit follows Bilbo Baggins as he journeys across Middle Earth with a band of dwarves and Gandalf the Grey to help them recover their stolen fortress from an evil dragon named Smaug. Although Bilbo is a reluctant adventurer who would rather be home amongst his books, he carries his weight rather well during the various battles and perils they face throughout the movie.
The Hobbit is a solid film that fits in nicely with the Lord of the Rings mythos, but unfortunately it felt like it dragged quite a bit throughout the film. In order to do the book justice, they have stretched the film into two or three movies and this was just the introduction. Because of this the movie seemed a little slower than its previous films, although all three of the Lord of the Ring movies were three hours long. The sense of dread that existed in the first three films doesn’t exist here because it is just a good adventure, although the actions that Bilbo takes does put Middle Earth on the precarious path that we see in the later films.
If you didn’t care for the Lord of the Rings, then you won’t like this either. If you loved the Lord of the Rings, then this movie will sate your appetite for more J.R. Tolkien fare. Despite its sluggishness at times, I still enjoyed the film, story and the various characters. I have bought in and will be ready to return to Middle Earth.
Roshawn and Kameron wanted to go, but the 10:30 am show was too early for them!
