Ron Porter’s 2014 Summer Movie Previews!

Posted by

With the summer movie season fast approaching, it is time to list the films that are on my viewing list for the summer! Although summer is still two months away, my summer movie season actually began in March with the film 300: Rise of an Empire. The movies are listed in order of my anticipation, which does not guarantee their overall quality.

  1. Godzilla- My favorite 400 foot tall lizard is back in action after a long hiatus, and if the trailer is any indication, fans are in for a treat!

2. Amazing Spiderman 2- My favorite superhero of all time is swing back into action facing a host of evil super villains, Electro, Green Goblin and Rhino.

  1. The Raid 2- If the Raid 2 is anything like the outstanding The Raid, which was a martial arts, shoot’em up action fest then I am ready to strap up for a wild ride.

  1. Transformers: Age of Extinction- Yes! I liked all the Transformers movies, enough said!

  1. Captain America: Winter Solider- As a kid I thought he was a boring superhero, but his movies have been pretty good. This film looks like a winner!

  1. Interstellar- Although this does not come out until November, anything with Chris Nolan directing (Memento, Inception, Batman Trilogy) is gold! This movie is top secret, and all anyone knows is that it involves mankind’s exploration of space using hard science fact.

  1. Jupiter Ascending- I never even heard of this film until I saw the trailer a few months ago. Espionage and fighting on Earth and Space involving humans and aliens? What could be wrong with that?

  1. X-Men Day of Future Past- X-Men movies have been hit or miss over the years, but the last film X-Men: First Class was awesome. My fingers are crossed!

  1. Guardians of the Galaxy- Another film in the Marvel superhero universe that I didn’t think sounded very interesting until I saw the trailer. Alien worlds, space battles, laser shoot outs and wise cracking? Sounds pretty interesting to me.

10. Edge of Tomorrow- Tom Cruise is battling an alien invasion with combat armor. It seemed simple enough until they through in a time loop twist. Although I am not a fan of movies that deal with time travel, I am intrigued.

11. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes- Before Star Wars and Stormtroopers, there was the Planet of the Apes and the gorilla soldiers. The prequel to all of them that came out a few years ago Rise of the Planet of the Apes was remarkable! I hope the positive trend continues with this new release following the exploits of the ape leader Caesar.

12. Noah- The biblical account from Genesis comes to life with big budget special effects and storyline. I am looking forward to seeing how this translates on screen.

13. The Signal- I just saw the trailer for this film last week. All it showed were people acting crazy when hearing the “signal”. Lawrence Fishburn seems to be the title character walking around in an insulated suit investigating the events. The trailer caught my attention.

14. Transcendence- Johnny Depp is a super genius whose consciousness is transferred into a computer and all hell breaks loose. I have seen this concept in dozens of Star Trek episodes, so hopefully they have added a new twist to the idea. I have to support my sci-fi!

15. Hercules- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is channeling his inner Conan the Barbarian as he goes on the journey of Hercules before he becomes a legend. I like the Rock and his acting ability and he seems to be playing this with a ferocious angle with no tongue and cheek. If this is the case, I am in!
