The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies Review

the hobbitHo Hum, Ho Hum! This is not a Hobbit song, but my feelings about this movie and the previous two Hobbit movies in general. The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies is the final film in a trifecta of movies following the adventures of the Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, from the Shire. Although these three films are filled with action, adventure, and stories that are on par with the three Lord of the Rings movies, I have felt underwhelmed and uninspired by these films. These three Hobbit movies and this last one especially just felt soulless. Everything was there, like a new car, bright and shiny, but there wasn’t much underneath. I think the biggest problem I had with the film is that I did not connect to any of the characters at all. Even Legolas who was played by the same Orlando Bloom, lacked the fire and spirit that made him such an exciting character in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I think these three films could have been shortened to include maybe one or two films because it just seemed like there were too many characters who weren’t necessary to movie the story along.
Is the movie worth seeing? Yes it is, but it does not rise to the level of expectation that was created by the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. If you have not seen the first two films, don’t waste your money seeing this one, because all three films are really just one long film, and are not separate stories. You have to have seen the first two or read the book to understand what is going on.
