Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, is hilarious and borders sometimes on the cartoony side, but underneath all of the fun, laughs and vibrant colors of the latest Marvel film, is a touching story of family and a man who is missing the father he has never known, although his daddy has been with him the whole time. (You will catch the meaning of that by the end of the film.)
The current volume of the Guardians of the Galaxy adventure begins with our anti-heroes taking on a job to defend a planet’s planetary batteries from being consumed by a huge ugly monster. The team of Star Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Drax and Baby Groot successfully defend the batteries and defeat the monster, while listening to some cool tunes. The Guardians win a big pay day; however, as I mentioned the Guardians are anti-heroes, and so although they often perform good deeds, they are just as likely to commit criminal acts. Rocket steals the batteries they were hired to protect, and their employers become their enemies. While escaping from their former employers, the team is saved by a man, named Ego, who has a connection to Star Lord aka Peter Quill. This begins another adventure of discovery, hijinks, laughter and one liners that makes Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 a film too remember. Despite all of the funny scenes, and cool colorful planetary, space and action sequences, the story had a softer emotional side that actually touched me. Even with all of the comedy, that I felt got a little too much at times, this film, like the last one got me a little misty eyed at times.
Although this movie has a more interesting storyline than the original, it did not seem as ground breaking and awe inspiring as the first. I think the filmmakers pushed the comedy a little too much, and the dire situations that came up did not seem as threatening to the characters. I never really felt that the characters were in any kind of danger, which removed some of the realism that has been established in the Marvel Universe at least in my view.
Make sure you stay for credits! Unlike other Marvel movies where you sit impatiently waiting for the end credits so you can see the teaser trailer, the Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2 credits are the most entertaining, and creative credits I have ever seen in a movie. You will want to keep watching until they pull the lights up.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2 is a welcome and enjoyable addition to the Marvel Universe, and is worth spending those hard earned greenbacks to see.
